This course will trace the intersecting histories of the U.S and Vietnam throughout the 20th century and beyond. It will examine Vietnam’s colonial history and its struggle for independence and national unification in relation to French colonialism, Japanese occupation, American intervention and complex internal divisions. It will analyze U.S intervention in a global Cold War context, its military and diplomatic involvement, the anti-war movement, and Vietnam’s changing identity. We will examine the profound changes to Vietnamese society and culture brought on by the “American War” in Vietnam, and reflect upon the lasting political, social, economic, moral and intellectual legacies for the U.S.
